The Top 10 CV and Resume Mistakes! Part 1
March 7, 2008
Using a standard approach & format for your CV makes an enormous difference. It makes your CV both concise and relevant. Having read a huge number of CV’s you would be amazed at the sheer variety of showstoppers that occur with alarming regularity.
Some of the CVs you see are quite shocking. If they are an example of the quality of work that person would produce, you would not even want them near your company. But on the positive side, it makes it very easy to reject a large proportion of the CVs that cross your desk.
For your amusement, I have included a variety of the more obvious mistakes. Make sure you don’t repeat these!!!
The General
I have had plenty of CVs that were obviously written once and mailed to every advertisement that they could find. You scratch your head as to why they have sent you the CV as you can’t see the relevance of this to your vacancy. This simply wastes everyone’s time. Some companies keep databases of previous applicants, recording notes on each CV they receive. Putting in a poor application could prejudice your future applications.
The Relic
Most of us only dust off the CV when something goes wrong at work or you see an advertisement offering an exceptional package. All of a sudden there is a mad rush to get the CV up to date. Usually 80% of the effort goes into updating the details of your current position. The older positions get left as they are. The reviewer looking at the CV usually sees a change in the wording and emphasis which looks disjointed. It reflects a lack of effort and planning on the part of the candidate and rapidly makes a path for the bin. Make sure that you update your entire CV!
