Credit Crunch Hits City Jobs

April 18, 2008

Credit Crunch affects banking jobsThe Credit Crunch is hitting the banking sector hard. Around 2,300 jobs in the City of London are being lost as the Banks feel the full force of the problem.

The Swiss bank UBS is to lay of around 900 people, whilst Citigroup looks set to announce 1,000 redundancies. In addition Merril Lynch is embarking on a world wide staff reduction which is expected to loose 400 jobs in the UK.

The collapse of the US sub prime market has resulted in the bank’s huge losses of tens of billions of pounds due to bad debts. Much of this is due to their reckless lending policies which have now come back to roost. In the UK many housing market observers are forecasting a 30% price crash due to the credit crunch and simple plain unaffordability.

In the US, the Central Bank has intervened to reduce the impact of the crisis and there is considerable anticipation that the Bank of England will follow suit shortly. This will hopefully avoid too much of a hit on the overall UK job marketplace.
