Build a CV Cover That You Can Be Proud Of!
August 6, 2008
Do you every wonder if you should have some form of cover for your CV? Job Boards have made it really easy to apply for new positions, but should you still add a covering letter?
Up until recently, if you were applying for a job, you would almost always include a covering letter. However, if you have tried to apply on line, you will notice that many job boards don’t even have an option to add a covering letter!
Does this mean the covering letter is dead?
Far from it! The challenge with applying for jobs is to get your CV properly read. There can be hundreds of applications for some positions. Imagine if you were given a pile of 100 CV’s to read! This could be as many as 400 pages to wade through. Boredom is the order of the day and you soon start looking for a reason to bin a CV.
Your goal is to make sure that your CV gets noticed and read fully. Anything that makes this possible is a great benefit to getting the job that you deserve. Some form of CV cover is necessary. This can take a number of forms:
- Add a formal covering letter
- Ensure that your CV starts with a summary of your skills. Lets face it, CV’s are dry and dull. A short one paragraph summary at the top saves a lot of time for the consultant trying to work out if you are a good match for their job.
- Insert your covering letter into your CV on the first page. If there is no option to add a covering letter, this can help. Make sure that you tailor this for each job though!
The other option is to prepare a short 30 second ‘Elevator pitch’ describing your skills and experience. The idea behind this is that if you were stuck in an elevator with an important potential employer or client that you could sell yourself or your product in 30 seconds before you get out of the elevator. This pitch needs some work to get it slick.
If you can’t send a covering letter, it is worth ringing the consultant before you send the application and running through this pitch. If you can whet their appetite, you are far more likely to get an interview.
