It has always been difficult to find out exactly what you are worth. Browsing through job adverts can be give a false impression when employers give ranges where they never really intend to pay the highest figure. Agencies are also prone to exaggerate as they get paid a percentage of the salary that they place you for! However, a new tool has appeared on the scene in the UK which promises to be rather useful. Rumours abound that a UK website is adding a salary database to their site in the very near future.
Glassdoor.com provides an anonymous site where you can post information about major employers. This is a great site for finding background information about a company that has made you a job offer.There is a vast amout of gossop and more factual information. It is very useful for understanding the culture of an organisation. Although you may normally think in terms of your skills and experience, the company culture is actually the single biggest factor in how well you are likely to do.Any tool that can give you some insight is always welcome . I have worked with some of the best people in the IT business who have floundered in a company with a poor culture, but then gone on to great things immediately afterwards!
Now salary reviews can be posted allowing other job seekers to build a picture of the lows, averages and highs for their skills & experience. This can be useful at review time and essential when you are looking to move.
Hopefully the days of employers looking to pay the minimum will be reducing!
