BA Looks for 1400 voluntary Redundancies

September 15, 2008

British Airways has approached about 1400 of its managers offering them a voluntary redundancy package.  It is trying to minimise its costs during the present difficult trading conditions.

The massive increases in aviation fuel costs have hit every airline badly. In addition, the has also reduced demand for its lucrative, but expensive business class seats.

In a recent interview Willie Walsh the chief executive siad that they were “Facing the worst trading environment the industry has ever faced.”

This will be the second cost cutting round that Mr Walsh has initiated. Shortly after his arrival, he shed 597 staff, but ensured that the airline stayed competitive and profitable.

Despite its best efforts, its fuel bill is still expected to rise by more than £1 Billion to over £3 Billion pounds.
