Behavioral interview questions and answers - The Lowdown
September 18, 2008
Behavioural Interview is a method of interviewing candidates which seeks to determine how you would behave in particular circumstances. The basic principle is that by looking at how a candidate has dealt with a situation in the past, this will give a good picture of how that person would deal with that situation in the future.
By building a set of likely and challenging scenarios that you would have to deal with in the job, the interview can structure a set of questions to see if you have met the challenge in the past and then see if their answers would fit the employer’s needs.
Let’s face it, most interviews are fairly unorganised and the employer will usually go through your CV to discuss your previous roles and try to get a feel for you as a person.
How many times have you faced an interview where the interviewer stumbles through your CV and has obviously only scanned your details very superficially…….
Behavioral Interviewing is a process that enables an employer to conduct a more focus and targeted interview.

It is very important to know that you will face some interviews where the employers will utilise this approach to assess you. Although most interviews will be unstructured, it is often the better employers that adopt this approach and they are normally the best ones to work for!
The scenarios that you are likely to be interviewed about will often reflect on both your ‘technical skills’ as well as softer skills such as your ability to deal with pressure.
The interviewer will use a technique called ‘STAR’ to shape their questions as well as assess your answers. This formula is:
- The Situation or Task that you have undertaken
- The Actions you made in perform the task
- And the Result of your actions
