Behavioral interview questions and answers - Areas of Competence
September 19, 2008
There are potentially hundreds of questions that you could be asked during a behavioral interview. However, there is a loose framework of competences that you can use to help provide answers to almost any questions that are likely to arise. This tends to cover the softer aspects of your ability to perform a job. These are:
- Assertive management
- Ethical focus
- Team building and Leadership
- Communicating with others
- Getting Results
- Influencing and persuading
- Decision making abilities
- Researching abilities
- Time management and organisation
- Seeing the bigger picture
Almost every successful individual will have above average abilities in most of these areas. Well considered behavioral interviewing questions will be based around these areas. Almost every question that you come across should be in these areas.
There are also technical skills which are specific to the role. These can cover many areas including:
- Financial skills such as budget planning and management.
- Skills related to your profession
- IT skills such as the ability to use a PC and tools such as Microsoft Word.
If these skills are essential to the position it is likley that there will be some form of questions in these areas. The best questions should relate to a scenario and how you would handle this.
Typically these questions can be reversed to start “There was a similar problem at my current company…. The situation was…… I took the following steps to address this. This very much fits in with the STAR approach.
